Today DeeSWhite welcomes author, Cassieta Jefferson who is on tour with Write Now Literary Virtual Book Tours promoting her title, Be Still and Know. Cassieta has graciously taken a moment to converse with us.
DeeSWhite: Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
I’m an avid reader, but as I got older, I wanted to read something a little different. I figured if I wanted to read something different, maybe others did to so I began to write what I wanted to read.
DeeSWhite: What inspired you to write your first book?
Cassietta: My first book was the result of some of my own issues. I ashamed of some things I had done and seemed stuck; identifying with the mistake rather than the lesson I learned. So years later, as I was writing this book, God laid it on my heart to add that piece of it. In short, I was inspired to write this particular story to give young women in certain situations hope! I wanted them to know that they don’t have to live in shame because of an error in judgement.
DeeSWhite: Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
You should read Be Still & Know because it’s a story that will pull you right into the pages and move you to tears as well as laughter.
DeeSWhite: Why this subject matter…why now?
Because I want to give people hope! I want people to know that God loves them in spite of their situation. You don’t have to stay trapped in the past and you’re not a product of what you’ve done.
DeeSWhite: I believe that every author infuses his or her book(s) with a piece of himself or herself. What piece of you would you say resides within the pages of your book?
The struggle that I had as a young woman trying to get past mistakes that I made. People always want to remind you of what you’ve done, it was hard for me to (1) own what I did and (2) forgive myself, so I took that struggle and left them in the pages of this book.
DeeSWhite: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in this book?
No! Not a single aspect. That hard because there are some people who don’t like some of the material, but I don’t regret it. It was written this way for a purpose.
DeeSWhite: What did you learn about yourself while writing this book?
That I was stronger than I thought.
DeeSWhite: How did you come up with the title?
This book was actually called something else right up until it went to print. I was going through a situation and different people would minister to me and they would always reference Psalm 46:10 (Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.) It became special to me because it reminded me that I’m not to try to fix my situation, I am to be still and allow God to fix it for His glory. It seemed to fit the theme of the book and really spoke to my spirit — it still does.
DeeSWhite: How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
My dad actually bought my first book, so I celebrated with my family. I actually framed my first $10.
DeeSWhite: Awww. If readers get nothing else from your book, what is the one takeaway that you hope they do not miss?
That they are not the product of their past.
DeeSWhite: Name one entity that you feel supported you outside of family members?
I reached out to the host of Rejoice America, an Internet radio station for advertising and he read my book, Be Still & Know and loved it. Since then, he’s been a huge supporter, offering help with radio spots and advertising.
DeeSWhite: That is wonderful! What did you want to be when you grew up…was author on the list?
To be honest, author was not on the list until recently. I always thought I wanted to be an executive for some company, Enron was actually on my short list. I’m thankful that I followed my dream and not the dream that others had for me.
DeeSWhite: Excellent…that makes for a happier person and a much more fulfilling life. Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
Right now I’m working on a book called Hidden which will be the follow up to Be Still & Know. I’m also planning a Christmas book for the 2013 holiday season, and I’m hoping to work with a couple of authors that I met this year who I think are amazing.
DeeSWhite: Niceee. What book are you reading now?
Right now I’m reading Battlefield of the Mind by Joyce Myer, and From Brokenness to Greatness by LaTersa Blakely.
DeeSWhite: I’ve heard about Battlefield of the Mind and always intended to pick up a copy and never got around to it, let me know if I should. If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?
My laptop, a good book, and my juicer.
DeeSWhite: Hidden talent?
I’m a singer.
DeeSWhite: Me too! Favorite Candy?
Skittles…turtles come a close second.
DeeSWhite: Favorite smell?
DeeSWhite: Favorite scripture/quote?
Philippians 4:13 – I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me.
DeeSWhite: Niceee. Pet peeve?
Perhaps a lack of common courtesy.
DeeSWhite: Guilty Pleasure?
Some reality TV: I like Mary Mary and Tia and Tamera. I also love Chopped, Iron Chef, and HGTV.
DeeSWhite: TV or Movies?
DeeSWhite: Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays?
DeeSWhite: Amen! Coke or Pepsi?
Lol…I’m trying to cut back, but if I had to choose… Coke!!
DeeSWhite: Lol. What was your favorite children’s book?
Dr. Suess – Green Eggs and Ham
DeeSWhite: How do you react to a bad review?
I have to shake it off. I’m glad my book touches some but I understand that it may not be everyone’s taste.
DeeSWhite: Well said. If you were a super hero what would your kryptonite be?
DeeSWhite: You have won one million dollars what is the first thing that you would buy?
A house in the hills on the island of Oahu.
DeeSWhite: Niceee. What do you do in your free time?
I don’t have a lot of it, but when I do get free time, I enjoy hanging out with my family or reading a good book. I also enjoy hiking and checking out real estate.
DeeSWhite: In your wildest dreams, which author would you love to co-author a book with?
Francis Ray. I love her voice and how characters relate to one another. She’s an extremely romantic writer, in my humble opinion, and I think our styles would work well together.
DeeSWhite: Are there any new authors that have caught your interest?
I’ve actually gotten the opportunity to meet some incredible authors this year, so I’m really interested to see what’s coming down the line from Kathryn Lang, Jessica Britt, and Dominique Wilkins to name just a few. There are also a few on my list such as Tabitha Vinson and Paulette Harper-Johnson whose books I haven’t had the pleasure of reading, but I can’t wait to curl up with.
DeeSWhite: Name 3 top items on your bucket list.
The top there are (1) to visit Tahiti, (2) to learn to ride a horse, and (3) to dance in Brazil.
DeeSWhite: If you got a TV/movie deal, what would the names in your cast line up look like?
I actually think about this quite a bit because I, like most authors, would enjoy seeing Be Still & Know on the big screen. I would love to see Nate Parker and Jurnee Smollett as Alvin and Kai.
DeeSWhite: I’ll have to look up Nate Parker, however, I love Jurnee Smollett! Do you have anything specific that you wish to say to your readers?
Thank you for your continued support. I hope you all enjoy the things that are in the works for 2013.
